Girl tried to kill herself after strip-search by Met officers, mother says

  1. This showed up next to the thread about Johnson not being investigated on my reddit.

I hope I’m wrong, but the UK feels more and more like a South American/European country, where important institutions do not work and police is often incompetent, authoritarian and corrupt.

The main difference is that for most countries there seems to be improvement where, if this is indeed the case, the UK is regressing, which makes things even worse.

A 14-year-old, mixed race, autistic girl, with mental health problems, handcuffed and strip-searched. Where do you even begin with this?

  2. I’ve seen the footage from inside the station where they strip searched that other girl. Were all joking about it and making comments about her underwear. I assume it’s the same when it’s a 14 yeat old too.

The entire station, from the chief to the reception staff

Here’s the footage, complete with panty sniffing cops.

  3. What really gets me with all the apologists in the comments, is that at **no** point do they comment on how this resulted in a vulnerable autistic child who was already suffering with mental health problems, tipped her into trying to kill herself.

At no point do any of the apologist commentors even go near this. Just “Well I guess they needed to strip-search her. A bunch of adult male cops stripping this girl was justified. Can’t be helped!”

The trauma she sustained in the process and her subsequent attempted suicide isn’t even mentioned. Weird, that.

  4. Few weeks ago i said this and was heavilly downvoted. New week new story of abuse.

Where are the downvoters now? Speak up, be brave.

    >The ones they hire tend to be criminals Edit – have people missed the almost weekly stories of abuse of power, murder, sexual assault from police officers ever since they dropped their entry requirements?

“After spending more than 20 hours in custody, Olivia was discovered to be in possession of a sharpened stick and a small blade for the purposes of self-harming.”

So she did appear to have a hidden weapon on her that wasn’t found during the search everyone gets when arrested.

Its a bit of a rock and hard place situation, if she wasn’t properly searched and went on to kill herself then the police would have breached their duty of care and be rightfully blamed. Likewise they seem to have caused further harm anyway by being so heavy handed.

There should obviously be an investigation here to determine whether the force used was necessary and proportionate though.

Imo the real villain here is the under funding of public services, as usual. There should have been enough female officers on staff to not necessitate the presence of any male officers and she should have had a support worker present too (since her guardian was isolating).

There also should be proper mental health support for kids, especially after situations like this. I at least expect our police force to have better support processes in place for teenagers than fucking Love Island does.

  6. Anyone else kinda concerned by the trend on this subreddit lately of people rushing in to defend police officers forcibly stripping underage kids?

Child Q? Oh well someone thought they smelt drugs so it was totally reasonable to treat this kid like a drug mule

This kid? Well she had a pointy stick so she’s basically a hardened criminal. They *needed* to cut her underwear off her. And it totally justified male officers doing it, despite protocol being to not do that

    etc

  7. Not sure that the police could win in this situation, in the eyes of online commentators at least. If they hadn’t conducted a search and retrieved the weapon, the girl could have slashed her own wrists and bled to death on the floor of her cell. The police would have been slammed for reneging on their duty of care towards a vulnerable child with mental health problems, and would be called callous, incompetent, unfit for purpose. I’m quite certain that some of the people angry with this search would have been calling for criminal negligence charges

  8. Some comments are totally missing the point.

It doesn’t matter if she had a knife or whatever, she was treated like a rabid dog and wasn’t given the dignity of even having only same sex officers. It was communicated that she had special needs and may need support or a guardian, but they ignored it.

Our police force need to follow the rules

  9. This country really is going to shit.

Feels like we need a proper revolution to uproot all of this bullshit and correct course.

  10. WTF, that sounds awfully like they put on a show for those male cops who shouldn’t have even been there. Sick fuckers.

  11. Anyone defending the police in this instance, are everything that is wrong with our country at the moment. Hear no evil, see no evil.

  12. “Figures obtained by the BBC have revealed police carried out more than 13,000 strip-searches of young people aged under 18 over the past five years.
However, the true number of searches is likely to be significantly higher, as only 31 of 44 forces provided data.”

This means on average, 7 children are strip searched every day across the UK.

    That we know of.

I mean, even if you are debating this scenario required a strip search, surely that number raises your eyebrow?

  13. Yeah idc if she had a knife she shouldn’t be strip searched. Unless they plan to send her to prison for it I doubt it does anything anyway. What? Are we pretending like a confiscated knife can’t be replaced?

  14. Obviously the police have a little girl fetish problem … maybe some sort of social services agency could investigate and charge some of those folks with child abuse and pedophilia because this has all those ear marks.

Seems to me I’ve read this sort of thing several times now … are the cops trained that way?

  15. I don’t care if a teenager is a vicious murderer and rapist akin to the Sarah Everard killer. I still expect the police to follow the protocol of:

    * The legal guardian, the person that has responsibility for that child, needs to be informed
    * The strip-search needs to be done in front of same-sex staff only, not same-sex staff with the opposite sex on-looking

There aren’t any justifications for breaking these rules, ever, and you’re a monster yourself if you think there are. You don’t get less rights based on the perceived severity of your crime and even if that was the case, the poor girl had a fucking pointy stick in her pocket for gods sake.

  16. That’s disgusting, reminds me of the shit that went down in Abu Ghraib although there it’s 100x worse how can humans be this cruel the police force has a duty to serve and protect and here they’re behaving like a bunch of hooligans. Disgusting.
