ZACHARY, La. (WAFB) – Zachary’s mayor spoke about new businesses in the city, a hospital expansion, and an overall growing economy during an address to residents.
Mayor David McDavid highlighted the progress during his State of the City speech and as the year 2026 kicks off.
“From 2024 to 2025, we saw a 6.7% increase in sales tax, a clear sign that our local economy is strong, businesses are growing, and Zachary is increasingly recognized as a vibrant place to live, work, and invest,” the mayor explained.
The mayor said Aldi, 7 Brew Coffee, and Planet Fitness have opened their doors in just the past couple of months, which is part of a bigger effort to attract new businesses. According to the mayor, more than 50 retailers were engaged in 2025, and work continues to bring more grocery stores to Zachary.
In the year 2025, there was also a huge expansion in healthcare. Lane Regional Medical Center wrapped up work on a $90 million four-story patient tower. It features 48 private patient rooms, new ICU beds, and more.

Just days into the new year, Mayor McDavid is already looking toward the future and new ways to improve Zachary.
The mayor said an updated downtown plan and a new master plan for his city are set to launch.

“We are advancing strategic annexation efforts along Highway 61, the Mississippi River, and the diversion canal. Expanding to the river opens long-term opportunities, including a potential future port, barge-related commerce, riverboat access, and partnerships with natural gas providers,” Mayor McDavid explained.
