Rampant winter storms have led to snow piling up in certain downtown parking lots, but city staff say help is on the way.

After experiencing the fifth snowiest December on record, including close to 45 cm of snow in the final few days of the month, heavy winter weather continued into the new year.

As a result, snow piles have built up over certain parking spaces following clearing efforts.

This week, city staff say work is underway to take snow out of lots that were impacted.

“City parking lots are maintained by a contractor through our transit department,” said Nicole Maione, director of community services.

“The contractor has informed us that they will be working on removing snow from downtown parking lots this week.”

Over the holiday season, extreme winter weather covered the city in snow and ice and left the local airport virtually shut down as unsafe conditions grounded commercial flights.

There wasn’t much of a break in the first week of the new year.

“The city has been in a significant weather event since Dec. 27,” said Dan Perri, director of public works.

“The City of Sault Ste. Marie has received approximately 90 cm of snow over the past seven days, with another 15 cm falling Sunday night into Monday morning of this week. This brings the total to more than 100 cm of snow in a little over one week.”
