The former minister of transportation under the previous Liberal government says he’s not at all surprised to hear that the province is encountering difficulties recruiting snow plow operators for the eastern portion of the island.

The Department of Transportation says that of the 14 applications received for snow plow operators in the eastern region, only one made it through the process for hire.

Overall, the province has received 180 applications to fill 50 new positions, with 44 moving through the screening process.

Opposition member and former minister Elvis Loveless says he’s not at all surprised that some difficulties are being encountered hiring snow plow operators.

He says the previous government made attempts to recruit operators, “and it’s not easy.” He says that’s particularly true on the eastern portion of the island where “you’re competing with the municipalities as well, you’re competing with the private sector.”

He says promising 24 hour snow clearing was a risky one to make.
