This will be a critical year in determining the Albanian government’s approach towards the justice system, as the country seeks to maintain the progress it made towards EU membership in 2025.
Prime Minister’s Edi Rama has strongly criticised the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organised Crime, SPAK, after it sought the arrest of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Belinda Balluku, the highest public official ever charged so far.
The question is whether the government continues to attack judicial institutions in order to give support to Rama’s associates – when these are the same institutions that have brought about real progress in terms of the country’s EU accession process, which Rama has vowed to complete by the end of the decade.
