Fida Hussain Maleki, a member of Iran’s parliament, has announced that a suspect in the assassination of General Ikramuddin Saree, the former police chief of Takhar province, has been arrested in Tehran.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 7, in an interview with Iran’s Avash News Agency, Maleki said that the case is being taken seriously by Iran’s National Security Commission and the country’s security institutions.

Commenting on the arrest, the Iranian lawmaker said: “According to the latest information, the suspect has been detained; however, the Iranian Ministry of Interior must provide details.”

Maleki added that, according to assessments by Iran’s security agencies, the assassination was carried out in an organized manner and it is unlikely to have been motivated by personal reasons.

He further stated that General Ekramuddin Saree and Mohammad Amin Almas, both former Afghan security personnel, were assassinated in Tehran on December 24, and that investigations by Iranian security agencies are ongoing.

Previously, sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily newspaper that the suspects in the killing of General Ekramuddin Saree were directed by Taliban intelligence.
