During the weekend, strong winds will be accompanied by snowfall, with blizzards in many places, according to weatherman Toms Bricis.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has issued a yellow alert about an expected blizzard in Latgale, eastern Vidzeme and Sēlija, which will be in effect from 5 p.m. on Friday until 8 a.m. on Saturday, but the warning period may be extended and the area expanded. Follow the latest warnings on the portal bridinajumi.meteo.lv.

On Friday, low snowstorms are expected throughout Latvia, as even without snowfall, the wind will blow the snow into drifts and form snowdrifts and snowbanks. On Friday evening, snowfall will join the gusty north-easterly wind in Latgale. On Saturday night, the snowstorm will also cover Vidzeme and Zemgale, and during the day it will also reach Kurzeme.

Driving conditions will be difficult throughout Latvia, with snow drifts forming on the roads and visibility being poor at times.

Minor and regional roads may be difficult to navigate in some sections, but it cannot be ruled out that in some places, on more remote roads, snow drifts will completely halt traffic.

On Friday night, wind gusts will still reach 10-15 metres per second in most of Latvia, and up to 18 metres per second in some places on the coast of the Gulf of Riga. On Saturday, the wind will gradually slow down, but it will still be strong enough to cause snow drifts.

The air temperature during the weekend, both at night and during the day, will range from -15 C to -12 C in the east of the country to -6 C to -3 Cin Kurzeme.

At the beginning and middle of next week, the wind will slow down, but the cold will intensify.
