Piyush Goyal met Maroš Šefčovič in Brussels, reaffirming India’s commitment to a rules-based trade framework and advancing talks on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
Productive talks in Brussels as India and the EU move closer to a balanced, rules-based Free Trade Agreement that supports farmers, MSMEs, and stronger global supply chains.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has reaffirmed India’s commitment to a “mutually beneficial” and “rules-based” trading framework with the European Union (EU) following a high-level dialogue in Brussels.
In a statement shared via an X post on Friday, Minister Goyal detailed his discussions with the EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Mr. Maroš Šefčovič. The talks are part of a decisive push to finalize the long-pending India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is currently in a high-stakes phase of negotiations.
Goyal also emphasized that FTA would aim to safeguard the interests of farmers and MSMEs while integrating Indian industries into global supply chains.
A free trade agreement (FTA) is a pact between two or more countries to reduce or eliminate trade barriers such as customs duties, quotas, and restrictive regulations.
In 2025, India successfully concluded three Free Trade Agreements with New Zealand, Russia, and Oman, as a strategic attempt to diversify the exports and reduce dependence on one country amid a high level of geopolitical uncertainty and tariffs diplomacy.
