The objective of purchasing this equipment is to control external borders.

The Council of Ministers Resolution, published on 8 January in the Diário da República (Official Gazette), authorises the police force, as quoted by Observador, to incur “the expenditure related to the acquisition of hardware (e-gates), software and corrective maintenance services, with a view to increasing the processing capacity installed at external air borders”.

With the acquisition of the equipment, the PSP expects to increase border control and electronic border control positions.

According to Observador, the machines and their services will be acquired over the next three years, from 2026 to 2028.
