ADPD-The Green Party welcomed the announcement of investment to strengthen Malta’s electricity distribution network. This is a long-overdue development after years of neglect that contributed to frequent power cuts and undermined energy reliability for households and businesses alike.

A robust and modern distribution system is essential not only to prevent disruptions, but also to unlock Malta’s potential for a rapid transition to renewable energy generation, a transition that the Greens have long advocated.

ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci said:”For too long, Malta’s electricity grid has struggled under outdated infrastructure, with under-investment contributing to inefficiencies and power outages. We Greens have consistently highlighted the need for forward-looking planning and investment in a modern distribution network capable of handling the demands of a future energy system powered increasingly by clean, renewable, local sources. A strong grid is crucial for integrating renewables such as rooftop solar, wind, and community-based clean energy systems, which otherwise cannot reach their full potential without reliable grid capacity.”

ADPD-The Green Party Deputy Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo reiterated the party’s vision on energy:”Strengthening the network is also a key enabler for increasing the share of renewables in Malta’s energy mix. The growth in renewable energy share has been sluggish. We remain behind the country’s potential. ADPD-The Green Party has repeatedly called for ambitious targets, including aiming for 50 % renewables by 2030. This entails corresponding investments in infrastructure to support that growth. Increasing renewable generation domestically will reduce reliance on imported fuels and expensive subsidies that send money out of the country, instead keeping investment and benefits within our communities.”

“Transitioning to a grid capable of handling larger renewable inputs isn’t just about energy security, it is about economic stability and job creation. A vibrant renewable energy sector will create meaningful green jobs in installation, maintenance, research, and innovation, strengthening local skills and industries while fostering economic resilience. It will help reduce energy costs for families and businesses, enhance Malta’s energy sovereignty, and protect the environment for future generations.”
