Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls opened the innings for New Zealand in the ongoing first ODI against India at BCA Stadium in Vadodara on Sunday (January 11) and added 117 runs for the first wicket in 21.4 overs. During their 117-run stand for the first wicket, Nicholls scored 62 runs from 69 balls before getting caught behind by KL Rahul off Harshit Rana’s bowling. By adding more than 100 runs for the first wicket in the first ODI against India, Conway and Nicholls added their names in the record books. They became the first New Zealand opening pair in the 21st century to add more than 100 runs for the first wicket against India in an ODI match played in India.

The last Kiwi opening pair which managed to add more than 100 runs for the first wicket in an ODI match against India in India was Nathan Astle and Craig Spearman. On November 5, 1999, in Rajkot, Astle (120 from 136) and Spearman (68 from 44) added 115 runs in 15 overs for the Stephen Fleming-led side.

So far, only three times have New Zealand openers managed to add more than 100 runs for the first wicket against India in an ODI match played in India. The first time it happened was way back in 1988 when, on December 17, Andrew Jones (57 from 85) and John Wright (70 from 96) added 140 runs for the first wicket.
