The United States is back at it again on Sunday in Cape Breton, taking on Czechia on day two of the 2026 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship.
This could be an interesting matchup, as both teams enter Sunday after convincing wins on the opening day of the tournament.
The Americans dominated in their first game of the tournament. In taking on Slovakia, the U.S. outshot its opponent 75-5, waltzing to a 13-0 victory. Maggie Averill and Jane Daley scored hat tricks, while Kyle Amelkovich set a tournament record with 6 assists.
Czechia had a more…reasonable score against Finland in game two of the event. Despite falling behind early, the Czechs rolled the rest of the way to a 9-1 victory. Adela Mynarikova led the charge with four points. Tereza Gildainova scored twice, as she, Jule Jebouskova and Andrea Kantorova all had three points.
The U.S. enters this year’s tournament looking to avenge last year’s loss to Canada in the gold medal game. The Americans have made it to the championship game in all but one of the first 17 editions of the tournament, having won a record nine gold medals.
Czechia is a rising power in women’s hockey. Along with the success from their senior team, the Czechs also made a surprising run to the championship game at the U18s, in 2024.
