Stern & Hafferl Verkehr has now received the first two locomotives cleared for operation in both countries.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The units were built at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant and are fitted with the European Train Control System. In a Siemens press release, the company says the onboard configuration uses the modular Trainguard Basic unit and includes ETCS Baseline 3.6.

Siemens Vectron Dual Mode authorisation and onboard systems

Based on proven elements of the wider Vectron platform, the Vectron Dual Mode is designed for standard gauge (1,435 mm) and has a service weight of 90 tonnes. It is intended for 15 kV AC networks and can deliver up to 2,400 kW at the wheel when drawing power from the catenary; in diesel mode, output reaches up to 2,000 kW. The locomotive carries a 2,600-litre diesel tank and is rated for speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Cross-border services Germany Austria: delivery to Stern & Hafferl Verkehr

With dual authorisation in place, Stern & Hafferl Verkehr has taken delivery of the first two locomotives approved for use in both Germany and Austria. The dual-mode setup is aimed at seamless operation on partially electrified routes, avoiding time-consuming locomotive changes.

Siemens on dual traction and rail efficiency

Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, said the Germany–Austria authorisation supports the company’s focus on powerful, flexible locomotives for European freight and passenger transport.

He added that combining electric and diesel traction can improve efficiency and support a shift towards rail by keeping services moving where routes are not fully electrified—an approach also referenced in earlier Vectron Dual Mode reporting by Railway Supply.
