Export shipments dispatched by Peru LNG, South America’s flagship liquefied natural gas exporter, totaled 77 in 2025 versus 71 the previous year.
The bulk of the cargoes that left the company’s Pampa Melchorita complex last year went to Asia, according to data from hydrocarbons licensing authority Perupetro.
South Korea led offtake with 19 shipments, followed by Japan (11) and China (10), compared with 15, seven and eight, respectively, a year earlier.
Four cargoes were sent to Singapore, which had received none in 2024, while Taiwan saw a decline to three shipments from six.
For the Asia Natural Gas and Energy Association (ANGEA), “natural gas will be central to the global energy transition but particularly critical for Asia. Gas provides a much-lower emission alternative to coal that offsets intermittent renewable generation and supports increased penetration of solar and wind.”
“LNG demand is projected to grow to 2035 alongside increased power demand in the [Asia] region, requiring reliable supply partners,” according to ANGEA.
In a study commissioned by ANGEA, S&P Global Commodity Insights stated that “to realize power sector decarbonization in Asia, efforts should be focused on addressing structural barriers to coal phase-out and decarbonizing the gas/LNG value chain, while incentivizing and scaling renewable power.”
In the case of South Korea, one of the world’s top LNG importers, the government’s energy transition push has underpinned gas consumption.
Peru LNG also saw a 2025 increase in shipments to Spain (9), France (7) and the UK (5), compared with four each to Spain and France, and three to the UK the previous year.
Spanish gas company Enagás reported that increased demand for power generation drove higher gas use last year.
The remainder of Peru LNG’s 2025 exports went to Canada and the Netherlands (three each), Mexico (two) and India (one).
Shell International Trading Middle East is responsible for buying, transporting and selling Peru LNG.
