  1. The govt has it down to a fine art: denounce the reality they created as if they’re not in power and haven’t been in power for decades. Truly cynical.

  2. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have been in power in every generation since the foundation of the state…

I also love the bit where he says it’s “causing people to turn to populism” as a way of dismissing people’s legitimate criticisms of his government’s policies and ideology. It’s such a lazy trope.

  3. Foreign investment in housing for the sole purpose of renting them out. That’s not right and this clown in riding the gravy train.

  4. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so tragic at the same time that he obviously knows how bad things are for many people, he just doesn’t give a flying fuck because he’s got his.

Just wait till the day he has to sit in opposition. He’ll have all the talking points nailed down as if he and his party didn’t directly contribute to them.

  5. Oh but what about the bank of Mum and Dad Leo? He was lucky fellow getting a 100% mortgage and a 40 year loan term.

  6. Populism……..I can’t afford to live so I want to vote for another party that hasn’t been at the wheel over the last 20 years that has led to this……..

  7. ***”We’re doing everything we can to increase housing supply”***

    What a load of bullshit.

No legislation to reform the development process (i.e. zoning laws, restricting objections)

No legislation to reform compulsory purchase orders so they can purchase derelict buildings and transform them into housing

    No government construction of housing

No enforcement of current laws regarding short term letting

    No tax on vacant/derelict properties

Airbnb still operates widely, with more than 3000 properties available in Dublin (compared to 300 places available for locals to rent)

There are so many areas and ways the government could intervene and help the current situation, but they love the current market. After all, *”one person’s rent is another person’s income”.*

  8. He says all this even as he attends the WEF in Davos.
The organisation who’s slogan is “You will own nothing and be happy”.

What a coward, and a liar

  9. Austerity – which was a FG along with the Labour party imposition – was designed to pull the ladder up and save older generations at the expense of millenials. The current housing market is that outcome working as intended.

  10. How can he be so wrong?
Ireland already has some of the highest wages of Europe, yet it’s the worse place of Europe for housing.

So wages are not the problem.
Increasing wages will just create a more prices inflation.

The issue is the total disconnection between what you pay for housing, and what it actually costs.
Prices are the problem and should be regulated, limited.

  11. Fuck off Leo you complete dick. 😒 Leo’s policies have created this situation and unlike many TDs in his party who have no idea what they’re doing, Leo is ideologically committed to free market policies. I don’t believe for a single second that he has any concern for ordinary workers or their housing needs

  12. How can politicians say things like this.

How the absolute f@ck does increasing peoples pay make renting more affordable.

The second wages increase if supply stays the same, rents will rise.

This is literally the most basic economic principle.

The issue is supply of housing, the Irish tax code that incentivises buying a rental accommodation over investing in stocks, and a 100 other things.

Increasing wages alone will just increase rent.

  13. Says a guy whos been in government for over a decade. Not to mention that his party and their current major coalition partner have between them ruled the state for the vast majority of its existence.

  14. Bringing up the minimum wage doesn’t do anything. It just causes faster inflation.

The issue is that a large number of houses are being bought by people who will never live in them. Making legislation to decrease the demand on houses would be a better step than just increasing the minimum wage.

  15. One of the men directly involved in this injustice blames everyone but himself and his party.

Instead he stood by and let his precious free market get to the stage where entire generations are on the cusp of homelessness.

All to guarantee record shattering house prices and especially rents because, after all, “One person’s rent is another person’s income”

Can’t fucking wait for FG canvassers to darken my door come the next election.

  16. This lad is an absolute joke. How about we tax vacant homes?

Or better yet let’s tax 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th ect homes at incremental bands- this will encourage those lucky enough to have many properties to upsize when they can afford to rather than buy more (French system)

  17. Nice of him to accuse people of turning to populism because of the issues he and his party caused.

I mean, give us a reason to vote for you and you’ll get the vote. Give us sweet fuck all as you have been for decades and we’ll go elsewhere. Does that make sense to FG heads?
