LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – For years, LMPD has been working to manage the capacity in its impound lot off Frankfort Avenue.
In 2024, WAVE Troubleshooters revealed that vehicles had been stolen from the tow lot.
Now there’s a new plan in place, and LMPD is hoping it will be a long term solution to manage the more than 1,300 cars in the lot.
The impound lot is home to cars that have been abandoned, involved in accidents or criminal activity.
But the lot has long been overflowing for years, preventing city officials from picking up abandoned and dilapidated cars that sit on Louisville’s streets.
To help with that they’re partnering with a national firm, Vehicle Management Solutions or VMS.
Mayor Craig Greenberg says they’re going to operate and modernize the tow lot.
“A more efficient tow lot will allow us to process vehicles more quickly, improve our communications with community members who need to get their property back and ultimately provide better customer service to residents,” Greenberg said.
Greenberg says this partnership will help LMPD officers dedicate less time operating the tow lot and more time to solving crimes around the city.
