Eight people were arrested at the federal Whipple Building during protests on Monday night, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

A social media post from DHS says eight people were detained after demonstrators and DHS law enforcement clashed outside the building late Monday night.

Federal officials say protestors launched fireworks at law enforcement and threw bottles and ice at them.

A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS photographer at the scene captured federal law enforcement deploying chemical irritants at demonstrators.

Details about who was arrested and what they were detained for were not made available by DHS.
