Latvia’s Ministry of Defence on January 14th published what it claimed was evidence of collusion between the authorities in Belarus and illegal migrants attempting to cross the European Union’s external border.
“Information and recorded cases available to the National Armed Forces and the State Border Guard confirm the involvement of law enforcement and military structures of the Republic of Belarus in directing illegal migrants to the Latvian state border. Cases have been identified that indicate coordinated actions, including the movement of illegal migrants using Belarusian military transport and the participation of officials in organizing border crossing attempts,” said a statement from the Ministry.
“During border security measures, documents and communication equipment belonging to Belarusian military personnel were found on one of the detained illegal border crossers. During the inspection, it was determined that the aforementioned materials belong to military personnel from the reconnaissance battalion of the 19th Guards Mechanized Infantry Brigade, stationed in the Vitebsk region. The documents included internal documentation of the military unit, including records of issued material and technical equipment,” said the statement.
The Ministry also claimed that images of Belarusian border guards and illegal migrants, including in military-type vehicles, had been found on the mobile devices of detained illegal migrants. Several of these were published, but did not include any showing “internal documentation” of any military units. These pictures simply showed some walkie-talkie type items and a single image of three people in a vehicle, one of whom appears to be in Belarusian military garb, without any precise details of when, where, how or from whom the images were obtained.

“Cases have been recorded in which Belarusian border guards participate in transporting migrants to places from which they are directed to cross the Latvian state border. Cases have also been recorded that indicate the use of illegal migrants for information gathering purposes and other elements of the hybrid threat,” added the Ministry.
Latvia’s National Armed Forces and the State Border Guard regularly record instances of electronic warfare emanating from the territory of the Republic of Belarus, which affect the operation of communication and navigation systems in the border area, it claimed.

The Lukashenko regime has made no secret of its intention to flood the European Union with as many illegal migrants from third countries as it can.
Residents seeing suspicious activity in the border area are urged to report it to the emergency services by calling 112 or to the State Border Guard by calling 67913300.
