KANSAS (KOAM) — The State of Kansas launches a new $10,000,000 program aimed at enhancing school safety by using Artificial Intelligence.

According to the Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, the program, which is called the Safe and Secure Firearm Detection Program, funds AI-powered firearm detection systems that layers ZeroEyes software onto a school’s existing security cameras.

How the technology works

According to Attorney General Kobach:

Detects only brandished (openly displayed) firearms using AI – no facial recognition is involved.Verifies potential threats 24/7/365 by trained U.S. military veterans in a monitoring center to eliminate false alerts.Alerts school staff and local law enforcement in as little as 3-5 seconds with real-time details, including images and threat location.

Attorney General Kobach says the application period is open, but the program is on a first-come-first-serve basis.

No single school may request more than $250,000No district may receive more than $500,000 total across its schoolsApproval is contingent up satisfacorty IT feasibility assessment performed by ZeroEyes
