On Thursday, Germany will deploy 13 soldiers to Greenland to participate in a reconnaissance mission alongside several other European nations, according to the German government and the Ministry of Defence. This initiative arises in response to requests from the Danish government and follows recent comments from President Donald Trump regarding US interests in the area.
The mission is scheduled to take place from Thursday to Saturday. It aims to evaluate potential military contributions to enhance regional security, including maritime surveillance capabilities, as noted in a defence ministry statement.
President Trump has recently expressed the view that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark strategically located and rich in natural resources, is vital to US security interests. He has suggested that US ownership of the territory is necessary to prevent potential occupations by Russia or China, indicating that “all options are on the table” regarding its future. Such statements have heightened tensions in transatlantic relations.
Earlier on Wednesday, both Sweden and Norway announced plans to send military personnel to Greenland as part of this collaborative effort.
