Bank shares dragged Wall Street lower on Wednesday as the US earnings season opened with underwhelming results from several major lenders. 

Shares in Citigroup and Wells Fargo were among the biggest fallers, with their shares dropping 3.3 per cent and 4.6 per cent, respectively.
