Cloverdale will host Hockey Day in Canada in Punjabi this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Surrey City Councillor Harry Bains recognized the event at the City of Surrey’s regular council meeting Jan. 12.
“On behalf of this council, and the city of Surrey, I’d like to invite you all there,” he said.
Bains added that he was proud to help welcome the event to Cloverdale.
“I hope everyone shows up,” he said. “It helps celebrate our hockey traditions, showcases are vibrant community, and brings people together.”
The nine-hour event will run from 1 – 10 p.m. Jan. 17 and will be held at both the new Cloverdale Sport & Ice Complex (CSIC) and the Museum of Surrey.
Hockey Day in Canada in Punjabi will be broadcast live from CSIC on OMNI Television from 4 – 7 p.m. Sportsnet’s Randip Janda will host the event.
The event in Cloverdale will be part of the national celebration “Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada.”
Moncton, N.B., will play host to the main celebration Jan. 17. The day features games with every Canadian team in action. The Flames will host the Islanders at noon. The Senators will host the Canadiens and the Jets will host the Maple Leafs—both at 4 p.m. The Canucks will host the Oilers in the final game of the day at 7 p.m.
Museum-goers will be able to watch Hockey Day in Canada programming, including the Canucks-Oilers game.
Visitors to the museum will also be able to take in the exhibition, “Our Connection to Hockey,” which is now being featured in the main hall.
“Showcasing Surrey’s own athletes and game-changers alongside national icons, this engaging and interactive exhibit explores Canada’s deep-rooted relationship with its national winter sport,” noted information in a museum press release earlier this year. “This original Museum of Surrey-curated experience celebrates the unifying power of hockey, highlighting its diversity, cultural significance, and impact on local communities.”
Some of the featured themes in the exhibit include: grassroots hockey initiatives, women’s hockey, para hockey, Punjabi broadcasters, and more.
