White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was accused of “gaslighting” Americans and engaging in “hypocrisy” after she voiced outrage over images of Minneapolis protesters giving their middle fingers to cameras.
Trump administration critics noted that Leavitt’s statement, during her daily news briefing Thursday, came a day after the White House downplayed the president flipping off a Ford plant employee.
Leavitt accused liberal “people in power” of encouraging the protesters in Minneapolis, whom she referred to as “left-wing agitators.”
“If you look at some of the images out of Minneapolis last night. Look at this vehicle, look at what it says: It says ‘F ICE.’ You have these individuals who are putting their middle finger — proudly so — at the camera,” Leavitt said.
“People don’t do this without encouragement from people in power who make it feel like it’s O.K.,” the press secretary continued.
Trump critics raised their eyebrows over Leavitt’s remarks, sharing photos of the president giving the middle finger.
“Who wants to tell her?” said liberal influencer Joanne Carducci, who tweets under the name JoJoFromJerz.
“This is so rich given her boss did the exact same thing this week. Oh wait, but that was ‘an appropriate response,’ coming from the President,” tweeted another X user. “The hypocrisy and gaslighting with these people is so off the charts that I think they’re starting to truly believe their own lies.”
Of Leavitt, another user said, “Is she this braindead?”
The White House press secretary addressed the media hours after Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to quell the protests.
“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State,” Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social profile.
The Insurrection Act of 1807, which authorizes the president to deploy the U.S. military in America in response to domestic unrest, was last used by then-President George H.W. Bush, who got the support to use the act by local officials.
