HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced plans to hold immigration officials accountable through legislation that would allow people to sue federal law enforcement officers and agencies for violating civil and constitutional rights.
The Connecticut Democrat’s proposed bill would allow cases to be heard in civil court. The legislation responds to the Trump administration’s continued deployment of immigration agents into cities across the nation.
“It amends the 1883 statute as its known commonly to provide rights in court for people when they are abused and violation of the law by federal officers,” Blumenthal said.
Currently, people can sue state and local law enforcement for constitutional violations, but that right does not extend to federal officials for the same actions.
