Yeah well that’s because a lot of people have moved here in recent years who just get by with English and four words of French.
This phenomenon has been existent here already when I was in primary school (90s and 00s). How come this is still the case and gets even worse?
racism and maladjusted/incompetent school systems
most teachers don’t take their job seriously and don’t put in effort to push students, comfort over progress
Surprising. I assumed they would be better at achool since so much is in French. I struggled A LOT with school once almost every subject was in French
I came from Brazil to Luxembourg when I was 9, I must say it was tough and in the beggining to learn all the languages but if you’re pushed a bit by your parents to study it should do it. I speak them all fluently except for German its a bit of a struggle. I finished high school (13eme) and didnt want to keep studying. There was however a weird feeling at school, of being ‘inferior’ because you don’t understand anyone else. So it’s understandable that they struggle and I hope it gets better one day.
Why only luxembourgers and germans?
I am luxembourgish and french fucked me deep into my butt back when I was in school. I still have huge problems speaking french today. Only with luck I actually got my première and only after my grades went up, because finally french was gone.
My Assumption:
Luxembourgish and German kids are usually from richer households, which leads to the fact that the parents won’t take them out of school if they don’t pass a year. (Because low income families have more to loose) Furthermore, more money = more means in order to help the kid. Luxembourgish parents also have a better access to our school system, they can speak with the teachers and know what’s going on.
I once read a study about something similar but in germany and I strongly assume that this is the case for our country too. I mean I know no Luxembourger who is actually good in french and 80% of our school system is in french.
Our school system sucks in general.
Native-speakerism/ pure language is a reality, unfortunately and they ask native proficiency in all 3 official languages. Could you pls put a link to the report?
The problem is that, primarly in primary school, all the focus is set on the german language, you can be an A+ student in every topic except for german and you won’t be put into classique.
It doesn’t matter if you barely speak 2 words french, that is a ok, but if you aren’t perfect in german teachers will treat you worse and discuss how bad you are.
