The Huskies closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Spain Park 16-12 and cutting the deficit to four points heading into the final eight minutes of the game. Grant led the comeback charge for Helena with eight points during the third frame. Hunter put six points on the board for Spain Park to lead it in that category.
Each team contributed eight points to its tally in the fourth quarter. All of Helena’s final-frame points belonged to Gracelyn Ambrose. Four members of the Jaguars added two points each during that period.
Ambrose tied the game and put the Huskies up multiple times during the final minutes of the game, but the Jaguars managed to pull out a win.
When the dust settled, Hunter was Spain Park’s leading scorer with 14 points and Grant matched that total to lead Helena in that area.
Spain Park (14-9, 2-1 Class 6A, Area 8) has another area matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 20, when it takes on the Pelham Panthers (11-8, 1-2 Class 6A, Area 8) on the road. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Helena (5-15, 0-4 Class 6A, Area 8) has an area meeting with the Chelsea Hornets (16-6, 4-0 Class 6A, Area 8) at home on Jan. 20.
