With some below freezing temperatures happening for the next several days, many people might be turning to indoor space heaters as an additional source to keep warm.
Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams advises everyone to not plug space heaters into a power strip that has other things or several space heaters plugged into it. By doing that, Williams points out, it can overload your electrical system and cause a fire.
“You definitely want to make sure that it’s isolated to one outlet and that’s the only thing on the outlet. Just check the cord, if the cord is getting warm, it’s because it’s drawing too much (amps) for that (cord).”
Williams recommends placing a space heater on a hard surface and keeping it away from carpet, curtains or other materials that are combustible.
