Singapore AirshowThe year 2025 might well go down as one of the most consequential in recent history, largely because of the re-direction of the US away from traditional allies into unknown territory. Mind you, that’s not a message the community has received from our politicians, who are in complete – and puzzling – denial of a very obvious reality.

The situation is a bit like the satirical movie ‘Don’t Look Up’, which is about a planet-killing asteroid hurtling towards earth, the existence of which is denied by world leaders, the mass media, and ultimately most people – with a predictable result. The shift in alignment of the US is not a matter of speculation – it has recently been spelt out in the 2025 National Security Strategy paper, which is a public document.

I t makes extraordinary reading because it blames Europe for many problems – and explicitly states that the US will look to support far right political parties so that when they gain power their values will be more closely aligned with those of the Trump administration. This is the most blatant signal that Washington plans to interfere in the domestic politics of other nations – something that has previously been considered unacceptable behaviour.
