RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — There were calls for freedom for Iranians in downtown Raleigh this evening.

This comes as ABC News is learning from human rights groups that thousands of protestors in Iran have been killed.

Unrest in the country against the government has grown in recent weeks.

More than 100 people gathered outside the Wake County Courthouse for this rally.

The current regime in Iran shut off internet access in the country and closed the borders.

The D.C. based Human Rights Activists News Agency tells ABC News close to 3,000 protesters have been killed by the regime since the unrest began.

Back here at home, Iranians in the Triangle say the rally serves as a call to action for more foreign intervention.

“If they want to act, they need to act now. Every second is equal to killing thousands of people,” said Mozhjan Kiani who fled Iran in 2006.

“The basic demands of the people are basic human rights, ability to roam around the country without persecution. They want freedom of speech. They want freedom of expression and so forth, which this regime is incapable of offering,” said Shahram Mazhari.

ABC News has not been able to independently identify the total number of civilian deaths on the ground in Iran.

Organizers tell us there are more than 15,000 Iranians who live here in North Carolina.

More of these rallies are planned across NC including here at home and others planned in Charlotte.
