Kakao Bank launched a sign language consultation service using “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Avatar” on the 19th for the convenient use of financial services for deaf customers.

Kakao Bank launched the service based on the fact that it is difficult for deaf people to understand complex financial terms or business procedures due to different grammar systems from ordinary Korean sentences.

Deaf people can use sign language counseling services in “Frequently Asked Questions” if they click on the customer center menu in the Kakao Bank app in the future. Major financial inquiries such as account opening, card issuance, and app usage are all available in sign language.

To this end, Kakao Bank introduced a Generative AI based “actual AI avatar” to implement facial expressions and movements similar to those of real people. Sign language provides a familiar experience as if communicating with a real sign language interpreter because signals such as facial expressions, gazes, and mouth shapes as well as hand gestures play an important role in conveying meaning.

It also sought to secure the accuracy and reliability of information delivery by reorganizing vast amounts of financial-related information in accordance with the sign language grammar system. The service can be used by anyone by selecting “Sign language counseling” from the menu of the Kakao Bank app “Customer Center” or entering keywords such as “Sign language counseling” in the “AI search” window.

Kakao Bank expects the service to provide an “independent financial experience” that allows deaf customers to handle financial business without the help of others.

Kakao Bank said, “We have prepared an AI sign language consultation service so that anyone can easily understand and use financial information regardless of whether they have a disability,” adding, “We will continue to expand technology-based accessibility innovation to reduce financial blind spots and practice inclusive finance.”
