ZAGREB, 19 Jan (Hina) – The programme “Kvarner – European Region of Gastronomy 2026” began on Thursday with the Festival of Carnival Food in Matulji, showcasing the richness of the local gastronomic heritage, traditional dishes and customs.

Kvarner holds the title of European Region of Gastronomy for 2026, awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism.

The title is granted to regions that stand out for preserving their gastronomic heritage, adopting a sustainable approach to food production, linking gastronomy with culture and identity, and fostering strong local cooperation.

The title holder is selected on the basis of a long-term strategy and cooperation among local communities, producers, hospitality providers and the tourism sector.

The aim is to promote local and traditional cuisine, encourage sustainable production and short supply chains, strengthen regional identity through gastronomy, and promote the region internationally as a gastronomic destination.

The Festival of Carnival Food is a traditional event celebrating local carnival customs and identity, as well as food, music and carnival traditions.

Ivica Lukanović, Prefect of Primorje–Gorski Kotar County, said that Kvarner’s designation as European Region of Gastronomy 2026 is both a great honour and a responsibility.

“It is an excellent opportunity to further promote our indigenous products and local producers. Although we do not have them in large quantities, their quality is outstanding, and this is precisely what we are recognised for,” he said.

The hosts of the Festival of Carnival Food are the local tourist boards in the wider Rijeka region.
