South Korean officials say the country will negotiate with the United States in an effort to secure more favourable terms on chip tariffs.

The South Korean trade minister said the measures are expected to have only a limited impact on the country’s companies, despite the importance of the sector to the national economy.

South Korea is home to some of the world’s largest memory chip producers, including Samsung and SK Hynix, and the government says it will continue discussions to protect the competitiveness of its semiconductor industry.
