Denmark accuses UK of breaking Brexit fishing deal over trawling ban

  1. The UK announced in February that it wanted to ban bottom trawling at the Dogger Bank conservation zone in the North Sea, a move hailed by environmentalists hopeful of seeing a resurgence of halibut, sharks and skate in the once marine life rich sandbank.

Maybe there is a valid reason to do it?

Its our waters at the end of the day if we want to product the waters to improve sea life I dont see the big issue.

  2. > “The Brexit agreement ensures full access [for EU vessels] to fish in UK waters until 2026. And therefore, of course, it is a very big problem for us if the British government is going to change that. We find that unacceptable and it’s a breach of our agreement,” he said.

IIRC, the deal grants EU vessels a fixed percentage of the total catch in UK waters, i.e. once the sustainable quota is worked out, it’s shared between UK and EU fishermen as per the split in the deal.

But, a possible loophole of this is that the UK can use regulation to prohibit fishing in certain areas by making them protected. That reduces the total catch of both UK and EU fishermen but doesn’t affect the *share*. If that’s the case, Denmark don’t have a leg to stand on, as the UK isn’t breaking the deal – the EU simply didn’t get an agreement which ensured watertight (pun intended) access to UK fish stocks.

From a moral and environmental perspective, trawling is a fucking disgrace and its about high time it was ended. If the UK government is doing the right thing from a sustainability perspective, whilst giving the EU the middle finger, I fail to see the problem. The EU’s policies on fisheries has been an unmitigated disaster for marine life.

Is this the hill they really want to die on? I thought the fishing stuff had gone a bit quiet over the past couple of weeks.

  4. I have very little sympathy for any country signing pacts with the UK and expecting them to be fulfilled at this stage.

Signing the deals in the first place only helps the idiot UK Brexiteer position and it’s been clear for a while now that the British government acts in very bad faith over these things.

Stop agreeing to these deals and damage the UK brexiteers. So no. No sympathy for Denmark here.

  5. Not taking any stance here, but our seas are in dire need of regeneration. We can’t keep going with destroying the ocean like we are doing currently (with “we” I mean humans). I mean technically we can, but the consequences…

  6. So they want to fish using extremely destructive methods in a conservation zone? Get fucked Denmark.

  7. We should be placing large immovable objects down there to serve as habitats for marine life, and to stop any boats ripping up the seabed.

  8. The French fishing industry had a bone to pick with UK fishing practices, and now enters the Danish fishing industry! I guess a fishing coalition would be an opportunity to show some EU cooperation for once…

  9. Seems like the Danish representative is (either by real or feigned incompetence) failing to understand the deal they signed.

The UK grants EU fishermen equality of access. That doesn’t mean that they are free from all regulations. If we ban fishermen from fucking up the seabed in a conservation zone, that applies to EU fishermen just as much as our own.

If the deal worked as the Danish representative is claiming, EU fishermen would be free to catch as many fish as they want, or to break the ban on whaling, toss dynamite into the sea or basically do whatever the fuck they feel like in the name of having access to uk waters.

  10. The Brexiteers are out in force on this post. For once, I agree with them. Trawlers should be banned.

  11. I love how much this means to the British people. I always see it in their newspapers. Seems like a national story constantly for some reason. Meanwhile in other countries literally nobody gives a single fuck, except maybe in Iceland. I’d guess 95% of Danes don’t want trawling and also don’t really care about our fishing rights nearly as much as it seems the british do.

I’m Danish, and trust me, nobody cares here. It’s not even reported anywhere. Yea ban trawling. Honestly that is awesome. I cannot even remember the last time anyone cared about fishing, and we eat like twice the fish that brits do.

But this weird patriotic thing with fishing that the UK has going on is strange. It reminds me of the US thing where they’re always afraid that someone is coming to take their guns.

It seems like a thing to get UK voters to be all like “Yea, fuck denmark/netherlands/norway/etc.!” and then there will be some banding together. Like why am i always hearing about fishing rights from a country that doesn’t even eat that much fish?
