ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) — The Science Museum of Western Virginia will close its location at Center in the Square at the end of 2026, marking the end of a 42-year partnership between the two privately owned nonprofits.

Center in the Square confirmed that the Science Museum’s lease expires on Dec. 31, 2026.

“We wish them much success in finding a new location and would be happy to find new ways to support them in their next space,” said Center in the Square President and General Manager Tara Marciniak.

Center in the Square, which operates four historic buildings, said it plans to announce future uses for the fourth and fifth floors in the coming months.

The organization said its focus remains on creating interactive, educational environments that encourage continued visitation to downtown Roanoke.

The Science Museum of Western Virginia also took to social media to provide its visitors and members with an update on the situation. “While the temporary transition before our final home may look a little different, what we can say with confidence is this: we will continue to have the Eye. All of the equipment, technology and tools that so many of you funded and believed in are moving forward with us.”

The museum reminded people that it is still open throughout 2026. “In the meantime, the best way to support us is simply to show up. We’re here throughout all of 2026,” shared their post. “Please come celebrate science with us. Your presence matters. Your support matters. And we are so grateful to be doing this work alongside you.”
