Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions said it is committed to promoting literacy among rural communities to enable them to face climate change and build Climate-Resilient Villages.

“Literacy on resilience to climate change in villages today is still low. Therefore, we will seek constructive ways and systems to ensure that villages understand, are willing, and become the main actors in overseeing and addressing climate change,” Minister Yandri Susanto said here on Monday.

He made the statement after opening the Global Knowledge Exchange on Community-Driven Approaches for Resilience workshop, organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the World Bank.

He expressed hope that improved literacy would position villages as key actors in addressing climate change.

He also expected the Global Knowledge Exchange on Community-Driven Approaches for Resilience workshop to produce recommendations that could be utilized in formulating policies related to village resilience in the face of climate change.

According to him, climate change has now demanded communities to be resilient, particularly those living in villages.

“When climate impacts occur, villages are the ones that feel the effects the most. At the end of 2025, we witnessed that thousands of villages in North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra were affected by disasters,” he pointed out.

He also reminded that strengthening village resilience in facing climate change requires cooperation from all parties.

“Therefore, through this (workshop) with the World Bank, we will ensure that (climate change) literacy and to say that climate is our shared responsibility truly reach the people, the information and the program reach them. This is not merely talking, nor just ceremonial,” he said.
