The Bon Air area is set to get a new-to-market brunch chain.

Vicious Biscuit has leased the former Southbound restaurant space in the Trader Joe’s-anchored Stony Point Village Shopping Center.

The 3,600-square-foot space at 3036 Stony Point Road will be the fast-casual brunch and lunch chain’s first location in Virginia. Vicious Biscuit was founded in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2017 and now has 11 locations, mostly in the Southeast.

As its name would suggest, Vicious Biscuit’s menu features dishes like fried chicken biscuits, biscuits and gravy, and eggs benedict over biscuits. It also features brunch classics like huevos rancheros and chicken and waffles, as well as Southern sides like hush puppies and beignets.

It operates on a counter-service model with most dishes priced between $5 and $16. Local franchisee GR Waldrop, who also owns the area’s Jersey Mike’s franchises, said he was looking to branch out and bring something new to Richmond.

“What drove me to it was that the food is chef-inspired. One of the founding partners was a chef in a food truck, and then got a partner who wanted to kind of blow it up and make it bigger, so the food is really good, I think,” Waldrop said. “And also with the (quick-service restaurant) model of ordering at the counter, it allows for that full brunch experience on a quicker timetable.”

Vicious Biscuit also offers brunch cocktails like mimosas, espresso martinis and Kentucky coffees, and Waldrop said it also has a catering operation.

Thalhimer’s Jim Ashby and Alicia Brown brokered the deal for Vicious Biscuit’s Stony Point lease. The space is where Southbound had operated for about a decade before closing in the fall of 2024.

Waldrop said the space needs minimal work and that they’re looking to open in the summer with a staff of around 50. Cross Creek Builders is the contractor handling the build-out.

Vicious Biscuit is open seven days per week from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Waldrop said his franchise deal was for four locations in the Richmond area, and that he’s looking all over the region for additional spots, including Ashland and Hull Street Road in Chesterfield.

“We’d really like to do one at Short Pump, because I feel like that’s the flagship of Richmond. Everyone goes to Short Pump,” he said. “But we’re looking anywhere around the Richmond area.”

Late last year Big Kitchen Hospitality brought another new restaurant to Stony Point Village with The Granite Grill.
