On the occasion of the closing of the exhibition “Alexander the Great – Return to Egypt,” hosted at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and featuring works by painter Makis Varlamis, a delegation of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) paid an official visit to the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
The delegation, consisting of Greek mayors, municipal officials, and representatives of KEDE, was warmly received by Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Theodore II, who briefed them in detail on the Patriarchate’s extensive missionary, charitable, social, and educational work across Africa. The representatives expressed their deep respect and appreciation for the Patriarchate’s mission and long-standing contribution to local communities.
During the meeting, Pavlos Trochopoulos, a key contributor to the organization of the exhibition and representative of the Vergina Experimental Workshop, was honored by the Patriarch with the Golden Lion of the Patriarchate of Alexandria in recognition of his longstanding contribution to promoting Greek culture and strengthening cultural ties between Greece and Egypt.
The visit highlighted the enduring role of Alexandria as a meeting point of cultures and reaffirmed the power of art and culture as bridges of memory, dialogue, and cooperation. On the same day, the Patriarch also met with a delegation from the University of the Peloponnese to discuss prospects for future collaboration in archaeology, historical research, and cultural heritage.
