Germany is now home to more than 14 million foreign nationals, with Croatians ranking among the top ten largest foreign communities, according to the latest figures from the country’s Central Register of Foreigners (AZR).

Data published by Focus.de shows that 14,077,867 foreign citizens currently live in Germany.

With Germany’s total population standing at around 83.6 million, foreigners now account for almost 17 per cent of the population.

According to the AZR figures, 414,555 people of Croatian origin are currently living in Germany, placing Croatians ninth on the list of foreign nationals by country of origin.

Turks Still Largest Group – But Ukraine Close Behind

For decades, people from Turkey have been by far the largest foreign group in Germany. With around 1.52 million residents, they still hold first place. However, this position could soon change.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukrainian migration to Germany has surged dramatically.

Germany now officially hosts more than 1.4 million Ukrainians, meaning only around 120,000 more arrivals would be needed for Ukrainians to overtake Turks as the largest foreign community.
