New Delhi: A 55-year-old businessman died after being crushed under a petroleum tanker in west Delhi’s Mangolpuri industrial area on Tuesday. The crash was allegedly triggered when a mini truck driver suddenly opened his door, causing the victim to lose control of his scooty and fall. The deceased was identified as Gyan Chand, a resident of Rishi Nagar in Rani Bagh, who was engaged in private business selling coils of heaters. Mangolpuri police station received an intimation from Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital, Pitampura, informing them that a man was brought dead. Chand was rushed to the hospital by his brother following the accident. Chand was on his way to his factory in Mangolpuri Industrial Area Phase-II when the incident took place. A statement was recorded from Sovind Kumar, Chand’s brother-in-law, who was informed about the sequence of events. Kumar said a mini truck was parked in front of the factory gate at the time. Investigators suspect the mini truck driver opened his door without checking for oncoming traffic, causing Chand’s scooty to hit it and him to fall onto the road. Moments later, a petroleum tanker approaching from behind reportedly ran over him. “He was crushed underneath the rear tyre of the tanker,” a senior police officer said. Police said the accident site lacked CCTV camera coverage, which made it difficult to trace the mini truck’s driver. Efforts are underway to identify and locate the driver, who is suspected of having acted negligently by opening the vehicle door abruptly. However, the driver of the petroleum tanker was taken into custody, and the vehicle was seized for further examination. A helmet was also recovered from the accident site.
