EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — The El Paso County Medical Examiner has determined that 48-year-old Francisco Gaspar-Andres, the first migrant to die at Camp East Montana, died of natural causes, according to an autopsy report obtained by KFOX14/CBS4.
According to the autopsy report, Gaspar-Andres died of natural causes linked to complications of advanced liver disease.
“Francisco Gaspar-Andres died of complications of alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis. According to reports the decedent was transported to Sierra Providence East on 11/16/25 from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center. Autopsy revealed medical intervention and liver cirrhosis. The manner of death is natural,” the autopsy states.
This comes after Gaspar-Andres had been hospitalized for several weeks before his death on Dec. 3.
Gaspar-Andres entered the United States illegally by crossing the international boundary from Mexico at a non-designated port of entry.
He was arrested on Sept. 1 by Florida Highway Patrol troopers in collaboration with Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Miami.
After being processed at the Krome South Processing Center in Miami, he was transferred to ERO El Paso on Sept. 19 and detained at the Camp East Montana detention facility pending removal proceedings.
Throughout his detention, Gaspar-Andres received medical treatment for various ailments, including acid reflux, headaches, and flu-like symptoms, ICE officials said.
On Nov. 14, an immigration judge ordered his removal to Guatemala.
However, his health deteriorated, leading to his admission to The Hospitals of Providence on Nov. 16 due to low sodium levels.
He was later diagnosed with hyponatremia and pansinusitis, and his condition continued to decline despite receiving antibiotics, intravenous fluids, and dialysis, according to ICE.
Gaspar-Andres was placed on a liver transplant list and received palliative care.
Despite efforts by medical staff, his health worsened, resulting in renal failure and internal bleeding.
He was placed on supplemental oxygen for comfort before being pronounced dead.
