The government announced a comprehensive set of policies aimed at tightening regulations on foreign nationals and immigration on Friday, including making naturalization more difficult and doubling the number of state-funded deportations escorted by immigration officers.

Taking a carrot-and-stick approach, the government says it will help foreign workers and their family members better integrate by ensuring access to Japanese language programs.

Specific goals and timelines for some policies are still under discussion, including those on land purchases by foreign nationals, which will be decided this summer.
