Hundreds to protest outside RAF Lakenheath as US prepares to store nuclear weapons there

  1. Ridiculous. These people are dreamers… nuclear weapons will continue to be nessecary for as long as our enemies have them. Getting rid of them is absolutely ridiculous and anybody that doesn’t see that is unbelievably naive.

  2. I am sure the might of the US/UK global military complex is going to be swayed by hundreds of protesters.

  3. Ultimately, the arguments against this are largely moot given the UK’s own nuclear weapons. We are already a target, likely would be without the weapons anyway, and the storage places are the safest bet.

  4. >and put Britain on the front line in a NATO/Russia war.

Sorry, but since the cold war started, the UK has never *not* been a front line target. We’re a nuclear power.

  5. These people don’t realise that if it wasn’t for a nuclear deterrent there would be more wars, as in WW2 scale wars. And conscription.

How can they not see the relative peace we now live in compared to thousands of years of wars.

  6. As a Suffolk local. Hahahahahahahahaa!

What makes you think they haven’t had nuclear weapons there on and off for the last 70years? You think the sudden additional 800 servicemen and stricter entry that gets dropped a year later that happens routinely is just for fun?

  7. To all those saying ‘we were already a target’, what we actually learned from Soviet documentation after the end of the cold war actually paints a more complex picture.

The Soviets did plan to use nuclear weapons pretty extensively in Europe, but specifically excluded Britain and France from their target lists precisely because of our independent deterrent. After all, if Britain were largely destroyed what would we have to lose in a counter-strike?

  8. Hundreds eh? Why Dont they move to Ukraine, they gave up nuclear weapons and its worked out quite well for them.

  9. I don’t think they realise how important just having nuclear capabilities are to deterring aggression against us.

  10. Why the protest? Clearly neither the UK, nor the US would be the ones to attack first, and as long as the *other side* has nuclear weapons too… It’s a necessary evil.

  11. What’s the big deal. Not harming anyone are they? I bet if the world stage ever got close to needing them, everyone would be grateful we had them. Move on.

  12. Am i the only person not liking that fact that we just know where the nukes are stored? Fair enough we know the us is storing them in the uk but don’t need which base or cafè

  13. What I don’t get about these protestors is…

Are they hoping the weapons will disappear?

Are they scared they may accidentally go off?

Are they worried we may be a priority target?

Well here’s some news for them, if it is true, they’re probably not ICMBs due to the infrastructure that’s required to house them, these will be aerial based bombs so less devastating in some respects.

The weapons won’t just disappear because they’re the only real deterrent as has been proven by the Ukraine war.

These weapons do not accidentally do off, they cost an incredible amount of money and are maintained to the highest standard; the US military spends more on maintaining their nuclear deterrent than we do in total military budget! They require a very exact sequence of triggers for the the warhead to activate so don’t just go whoopsy.

Finally, if there’s nuclear weapons based somewhere, you can guarantee that, that location will have the most advanced defence weapons to ensure those weapons can be deployed so there is likely a missile shield and top spec AA. If anything it’s probably safer to be near them.

IF they’re worried about nuclear death, Sizewell would be a much better target as the meltdown and reaction to a nuclear power core is far worse than that if a nuclear weapon.

  14. I have to say I’m considerably less worried about American-funded nuclear weapons being on UK soil than I am about the huge cost of our own.

In an ideal world where there’s infinite money for everything, sure, carry a big stick, but I think even under the current political climate better conventional forces are a better use of money.

  15. As opposed to the RAF storing nuclear weapons there? Nuclear weapons should never be used and I believe that the US shouldn’t have nuked Japan. But it is a nasty deterrent or in the case of Russia and North Korea, a rattle to be shaken. It’s a miltary base. It’s not like the US is gonna to suddenly store nukes in a village with a giant “DO NOT TOUCH” sign.
