Hey r/Ireland
The residents of the entire Shannon Arms apartment block in Limerick city have received eviction letters in the past few months. The landlord for the majority of these apartments is Supermacs owner Pat McDonagh.
Some tenants have already left their homes for emergency accommodation or are sleeping rough. Take a look at the properties available for rent in Limerick right now, and see for yourself where over 100 more people are going to go if they lose their homes.
There is a limited time to help these tenants that are facing eviction, and therefore homelessness. They need attention from government to block the evictions, and to change legislation to make similar mass evictions difficult or impossible. Please sign the CATU petition linked above.
More background:
**Edit** since I’m below the 20 karma limit:
Reasons given for the eviction is refurbishment. The company noted on the eviction notices seems to only exist on paper though, so in all likelihood they’ll have a painter in and be renting out the apartments 6 months later at higher rents.
For info on future protests keep an eye on CATU Limerick and Galway social media or join the union for newsletter updates. I’m just a member, not on any committee but if you go to the protests you can chat to CATU members and tenants who are being evicted who can tell you more about what’s going on.

Petitions are useless, might as well like and share a Facebook post.
People need to get out and protest or boycott Supermacs.
Crazy.. What reasons were given for the evictions?
What’s the reason given for the evictions?
Done
Friendly reminder that 100 households will take up just over 12% of available rental properties in the *entire country*, and 1,250% of available housing in Limerick.
For a second there I thought people in Limerick were being evicted from mass
I lived in those apartments for 3 years. From 2013-2016. In a an apartment owned by Pat managed by Limerick Residential.
Was talking with an old friend of mine who is still working for Smacs and thought they must have been joking when they told me about this.
Sure enough it turns out to be true. To turf all these people out in the current housing climate is heartless as fuck.
The apartments weren’t amazing but they definitely weren’t in a condition where renovations absolutely couldn’t wait.
The lift broke maybe a year after I moved in and they just never fixed it. Lived on the top floor so all that climbing gave me a fine set of legs haha.
Fuck you Pat McDonagh you scumbag. Boycott Supermacs.
Maybe we should go and tell him to his face?

If you ban evictions in Ireland then nobody will pay rent, mortgages will be defaulted on and we will have another recession with vulture funds purchasing these assets.
There are over ten Landlords who are all significantly renovating the whole apartment complex.
Once proper notice periods are given , are they not allowed to maintain/upgrade/renovate their own properties as they see fit?.
