SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — President Donald Trump offered his support for a renewed effort to repeal Utah’s voter-approved Proposition 4.
“A very important effort is underway in Utah to repeal Proposition 4, make Map Drawing accountable to Utah Voters, stop Radical Leftist Judges, and KEEP UTAH RED,” he said on Truth Social. “But this can only happen if enough Citizens of Utah sign the Petition to put the Prop 4 Repeal on the Ballot for the November 3, 2026 Election.”
Proposition 4 was approved by voters in 2018 and established an independent redistricting committee to ensure redistricting is nonpartisan. It passed by a narrow margin and has since faced ongoing legal challenges.

These challenges came to a head after Judge Dianna Gibson ruled congressional maps adopted in 2020 violated Prop 4. She then rejected a second map presented by the legislature in favor of a map drawn by the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. That map creates a Democrat-leaning district in Salt Lake County.
To put Proposition 4 back on the ballot, the GOP needs 8% of eligible voters, or about 141,000 people, from at least 26 of the 29 state Senate districts to sign a petition.
As of this week, the initiative has gathered 56,071 verified signatures, which is about 40% of the 140,748 signatures required statewide to qualify for the November ballot.
Utah Democratic Party Chair Brian King called Trump’s post a desperate move to intimidate voters.
“Donald Trump and his Utah Republican backers are desperate because they’re finally starting to come to terms with how unpopular their gerrymandering scam actually is,” King said, in part. “Utahns already voted on Prop 4 and made it crystal clear that they demand fair maps, fair elections, and fair representation. “
Elizabeth Rasmussen, Executive Director of Better Boundaries, said Utah’s maps are “governed by Utah law, not national politics.”
“After burning through millions of dollars, outside actors still can’t get enough Utahns to sign onto repealing the reform voters already passed,” she said. “That tells you everything. If this repeal were popular with Utah voters, it wouldn’t need national megaphones and millions of dollars to survive. Prop 4 was about keeping politicians from picking their voters. Utahns meant it then, and they continue to mean it now.”
President Trump’s full statement can be read below:
“The Great State of Utah, a place that I love and WON BIG in 2016, 2020, and 2024, sent four terrific Republicans to Congress, and we want to keep it that way! A very important effort is underway in Utah to repeal Proposition 4, make Map Drawing accountable to Utah Voters, stop Radical Leftist Judges, and KEEP UTAH RED.
But this can only happen if enough Citizens of Utah sign the Petition to put the Prop 4 Repeal on the Ballot for the November 3, 2026 Election. Utahns deserve Maps drawn by those they elect, not Rogue Judges or Leftwing Activists who never faced the Voters, and, therefore, I encourage all Patriotic Utahns, Republicans, and MAGA Supporters who love their Great State and Country to sign this initiative, ASAP. You must sign by February 15th! This is a very “Big Deal.” Thank you for your attention to this matter and, MAKE UTAH, AND AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN! Find where you can go sign here: ufrg.org/calendar”
If enough valid signatures are collected by the February deadline, Utah voters would once again decide the future of Prop. 4 in 2026.
