Obviously leaks are issue, but one Irish water are spending huge amounts reducing. 8-10% less reduction in a few years is huge when you think of how many water mains there are. This reduction will obviously slow down as they are basically now doing the easy ones.
I often hear people say that we didn’t have these issues before Irish water, we did the council just didn’t tell people.
These problems all stem from years of under investment when council’s were in charge. They put money into projects that were.more visible to the public and therefore could win more votes for councillors.
We need a huge investment in our water and wastewater systems for years to come.
Supply is just not adequate in some areas. Population has increased since the system was last upgraded fifty years ago.
One thing I noticed when moving here is that water conservation in general doesn’t seem to be a priority.
If they were serious about this, they would ban the old big fuck you tank toilets, work on regulating tap/sink pressure (though I’m sure people would absolutely livid about it), and i’m sure theres dozens of other major relics of water technology that are still common use here.
I think the fee on excessive water usage was noble, but seeing how violently that was rejected by the public, I doubt the others could happen.
That all being said, if the major systems are decades old and leaky, that’s probably the **first** thing to focus on instead of blaming the population.
