‘Gordon Lyons said his party would have a difficult task explaining its views on the protocol to the US politicians’
I’ll do it for you Gordon. The DUP don’t want an Irish party in charge
It’s fairly obvious that the DUP supported Brexit because they knew it would threaten the NI political settlement. They have a vested interest in escalating this issue because a complete breakdown of the Withdrawal Agreement and the TCA could force both the UK and the EU to establish a land border to remain compliant with the WTO treaty, which would derail the NI peace process, removing the legal basis for Irish unification and power-sharing between unionists and nationalists.
> Mr Neal said the US would be “unwavering” in its support of the Good Friday Agreement.
I can see why that would piss off the DUP.
They’re trying to tear up the Good Friday Agreement and renege on their promises. They’re also trying to pretend that they’re doing so in the name of protecting the GFA (and the Tories are making things worse by pretending to believe them) so of course they’re going to be pissed off when the GFA’s guarantors *actually* want to protect the GFA!
