‘Rail unions have reacted with fury to a government threat to make strike action illegal unless a minimum number of train staff work during a walkout.’
As a first resort not a last ? Plenty of talks with the top brass refusing to move at all on job security or a pay rise.
We are also being balloted for action short of strike basically an overtime ban and work to rule so talking all our required breaks and not saying “ACH it’s only half an hour fix we will work on to sort it”
Months of talks and they have refused to budge at all with the director of communications telling us all “should have worked harder at school” with no punishment.
All we want is a fair pay rise and for them to stop their frankly idiotic plans to pool the lowest grades together which yes would save money but instantly makes any job harder as they want to have all the lower grades just having a group of tickets so they won’t be of any use in disciple specific rolls. We’ve had no pay rise at all for 2 years while costs have spiraled. We’ve had our bonus stripped away and we didn’t complain as we believed it was for the general good.
Then we find out that all through the pandemic they have been plotting and scheming while being two faced as fuck and telling us how important the work we were doing was while planning on royally fucking us over.
Having complicated and draconian restrictions on legal strikes will only lead to illegal strikes.
The main protection a person has when participating in a legal strike is that they cannot be dismissed, that’s the main incentive not to just walk off the job as a group. If workers actually do it in sufficient numbers though it’s unlikely that the organisation can afford to fire them – especially in the case of skilled workers like railway folk.
How exactly can the government force minimum service ?
It’s skilled work and the vast majority with those skills I presume are in the union?
So not like they can fire everyone without grinding the whole thing to a halt for much longer surely?
