Guns and bombs smuggled into Dublin Airport

  1. >seven bombs **or** bomb making parts

I don’t have access to the report, but there’s a big difference between bombs and bomb making parts.

  2. We need more detail here. 8.5 million went though Dublin airport in 2019. To me 7 prohibited items getting through is very good result – how did other major airports compare?

At the end of the day human error is a major factor.

  3. Were these seven items sent as a test of airport security or were they discovered during routine airport security?

There’s a difference between the two scenarios which is unclear in the article.

  4. A lot missing here.

A gun getting through a security scanner into the hold is bad, but not remotely as bad as a gun getting through a security scanner in hand luggage.

They also seem to make a distinction in the text regarding explosives. The headline says a bomb. I think most of us would consider a bomb to be this: 💣

The text says a bomb-making component. That could be a mobile phone or a set of jump leads.

The headline is trying to present an image of Rambo wandering unmolested past security bedecked in AK47s and carrying a few bombs in his backpack. I’m not sure the text justifies the scary headline.

  5. That’s par for the course with any airport security. The TSA in the US regularly have failure rates of 70%-95% in tests.
