This new-build terraced house in Halle reinterprets the traditional row house layout by introducing a dynamic split-level living environment behind the existing street façade. The dwelling is organized around three enclosed volumes that structure daily life while creating spatial tension in between.
At ground level, the garage forms the first volume. The second volume, positioned along the rear façade, contains the master bedroom and a first children’s room. Along the front façade, a third volume accommodates the bathroom and a second children’s room. The spaces in between these volumes become living areas, encouraging visual connections and interaction between the occupants.
A monolithic concrete staircase acts as a sculptural centerpiece and spatial mediator, connecting the different levels and volumes. Integrated as an inhabitable in-between space, the staircase reinforces the split-level concept. A roof light above the stairwell introduces zenithal daylight, drawing natural light deep into the house and enhancing the sense of vertical continuity.
The architectural concept directly informs the material choices. The three enclosed volumes are clearly legible through their finishes: white plastered walls define the volumes, while shared masonry walls are painted white.
The staircase and floor slabs are executed entirely in exposed concrete, emphasizing their role as new interventions. Window materials vary within the intermediate spaces, combining planed Douglas wood for interior joinery, white aluminum for exterior frames, and black exterior joinery elsewhere.
