The German government has apparently reduced its military support for Ukraine to a minimum over the past nine weeks. So far, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has refused to supply German battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, citing coordination with NATO allies. But as documents obtained by WELT AM SONNTAG show, Germany has also hardly supplied any significant light weapons since the end of March.

According to the documents, only two arms deliveries from the German government arrived in Ukraine between March 30 and May 26. Both included only small arms. In mid-May, Germany sent 3,000 anti-tank mines and 1,600 more specialized anti-tank directional mines, according to a list.

Ukraine loses territories in the east

The Ukrainian army’s main problem at present is the superior Russian firepower in the east of the country. It can do little to counter this with mines. On Saturday, Russia announced “complete control” of the strategically important small town of Lyman in the Donbass region. Air and missile strikes were reported against the towns of Bachmut and Soledar in the Donetsk region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyy described the situation as difficult and announced fierce resistance on Friday. “The Donbass will remain Ukrainian,” he said. He said his army was protecting the country as well as “current defense resources” would allow. Repeatedly, he had called on the international community to provide more weapons.

When asked, a Defense Ministry spokeswoman told WORLD: “The information on specific arms deliveries is security-related and classified, so I ask for your understanding not to be able to provide more detailed information or confirm details.”

A different German shipment than the one in May had reached Ukraine a month earlier. But it contained only spare parts for machine guns, “primers,” detonating cords, radios, hand grenades, explosive charges and mines.

According to Ukraine, the last delivery of anti-air and anti-tank weapons took place on March 25, more than two months ago. It included 2000 rockets for the Panzerfaust 3 and 1500 Strela air defense missiles.

However, as a Ukrainian list dated March 29 indicates, there is still a need for these munitions. Thus, in addition to Stinger anti-air missiles and anti-tank weapons, the Ukrainian army also needs Harpoon anti-ship missiles. Ukraine confirmed the latter to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) in letters on April 9 and May 1.

So far, Germany has not complied with these requests, although Chancellor Scholz has publicly held out the prospect of further deliveries. For weeks, he reiterated that support for Kiev was continuing, most recently at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, saying, “However, Putin will only seriously negotiate peace if he realizes that he cannot break Ukraine’s defenses. That’s why we support Ukraine.”

Putin threatens Scholz in phone call
On Saturday, the Russian president again threatened Scholz in a phone call. According to Russian sources, Putin said further arms deliveries would be “dangerous.” He said there is a risk that “the situation in Ukraine will destabilize further.”

With aid from Berlin failing to materialize for several weeks, the German government is moving away from its allies, which continue to supply light weapons as well as heavy equipment. Kiev reported Saturday that it had received Harpoon missiles from Denmark and more self-propelled howitzers from the United States.

Washington contracted defense contractor Lockheed Martin in mid-May to produce 1,300 Javelin missiles for Kiev. Italy announced it would send anti-tank weapons, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, and mortars, and Britain promised hundreds of Brimstone anti-tank missiles.

With regard to heavy weapons, Scholz had issued the motto to deliver only in step with NATO partners. The support would be “closely coordinated with our partners and allies,” he affirmed on Thursday. Since no NATO country supplies Western-designed tanks, this served as a justification for refusing to supply German battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.

  3. This has been reported over and over for weeks. Yet certain German posters keep doing mental gymnastics to hand wave the facts away. Exactly the same whenever undermining sanctions to pay for gas/oil gets brought up and people very aggressively explain how Germany isn’t doing anything wrong while Finland/Poland/etc are having their gas deliveries halted. It just feels crazy.

  4. If this war has shown us anything its that the biggest countries of EU are completely unreliable spineless snakes… all of them… im sorry to say but the level of not giving a fuck about lives of ukrainians they displayed makes me think that even if baltic states or eastern europe would be attacked they would not move a finger and do the same thing… they are literally trying to quietly wait out situation so ukraine gets fucked by russia and they can hapilly restore the trade with russia i swear. France, Germany and now Italy are “trying to restart peace talks” a.k.a trying to convince ukraine to make concessions so they can go back to normal relationship with russia. I’m so disappointed by EU. Americans are from different continent and did 10 times as much as these muppets, aside from their own goals in ukraine US is the only reason why ukraine is still standing… EU is a joke

  5. So what’s going on? This is not the first German source talking about those problems. Some people say that all this Germany bashing is comes from anglo media and from East Europe. It seems this narrative is also alive in Germany.

Can someone from Germany elaborate? Is it just shit media hunting for clicks and conservative party or what?
